Since Humble Bundle announced the “Humble THQ Bundle” yesterday, there has been a lot of controversy over it. This is mainly due to the fact that Humble Bundle has always done indie bundles, not triple-A bundles. I was extremely frustrated to read hateful comments about the THQ bundle. This comment from a reddit post specifically frustrated me:
Great. They’ve sold out.
This goes against everything that humble bundles stood for:
- DRM-Free
- Cross-platform (as often as possible)
- Money going directly to the developers (i.e. no publishers)
- Supporting INDIE developers
First of all, Humble Bundle continues to support indie developers. They’ve stated that this will not affect their upcoming indie bundle(s) already. In fact, the next indie bundle is coming in just a few weeks! What is wrong with Humble Bundle offering a helping hand to a company that could potentially die out over the course of this next year? Can we just look at Humble Bundle’s company name for a second? Ask yourself this, what does “humble” mean? Would it not be an oxymoron to shy companies away in need based off of their company name? Regardless though, we have to keep in mind that a lot of the money going towards the THQ bundle is going towards charity as well. THQ could very well make no profit at all! But what would be wrong with THQ making a profit off of this? They need the money to stay afloat.
Besides, where on Humble Bundle’s website does it say that they only do indie bundles? What’s wrong with doing a bundle to help another company out while Humble Bundle gets all of their ducks in a row for the next bundle?
There have been many that said Humble Bundle has abandoned their core values. I don’t see how they’ve done this, when (as mentioned above) they said the THQ bundle won’t affect their upcoming indie bundles. The company who is named “Humble Bundle” has not strayed away from being humble. From what I see, they’ve stuck with their company name.
Humble Bundle is a “humble” company. They’ve proved this by releasing this most recent bundle. They’re offering a helping hand to struggling children through Child’s Play and they’re offering a helping hand to a struggling company. Tell me, how is that not a Humble Bundle?
Aside from THQ gaining profit, isn’t the Humble Bundle basically about charity anyway? Why can’t big name publishers like THQ partner with Humble Bundle in the name of charity?
